The Optimistic Child
book by Martin E. P. Seligman
Book does a good job addressing optimism and self-esteem in children. I like how it focuses on making sure children are not sheltered from every disappointment in life or coddled into believing they are wonderful at everything. Instead, it works on providing a real view of the world for children while accenting the positives and giving them ways to work through the negative.
I didn't get to finish reading it before it needed to go back to the library, but it seemed like a good resource for parent of young children who want to examine their parenting philosophy and get some extra viewpoints in shaping it. I felt that it was a little difficult to jump right into some of the ideas at my daughter's age (9) since there seems to be a lot of work needed just to get to some of the basic points in the book. However, this might have been addressed later in the book, I'm not sure.
