Deaf Meetup

Organized by meetup.com, go to deaf.meetup.com to sign up and vote on the location of the next meeting.

I am a little surprised by the welcome email I got from Meet Up. As far as I knew, hearing impaired is not considered an acceptable term for deaf or hard of hearing individuals. Actually, it is a pretty negative term. I suggest that caring individuals should email them an make them aware of the problem.

I recently signed up for the deaf.meetup.com in Baltimore, MD. I was extremely displeased to see the welcome email refer to members of the Deaf community as "hearing-impaired". This term is unacceptable in the Deaf community. The more accepted and preferred term is "hard of hearing". Please visit the National Association of the Deaf's website (http://www.nad.org/infocenter/infotogo/dcc/terms.html) for more information about terminology.

Thank you,
